Understanding Oral Systemic Balance PDF Print E-mail
The OSB Therapeutic System is a new diagnostic and therapeutic system for use in the management of symptoms associated with Temporo-mandibular Joint (TMJ), Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) and other conditions.

JaccuziTo understand how Oral Systemic Balance works and its effectiveness we need to know the following:

Inter-relatedness: Our bodies should be viewed as one organism. No part of our body is useful by itself without having relationship with other organs and systems. For example, when we hold an object in our hands, look at it with our eyes, our brain can decide what the object is.

Compensatory mechanisms: If something adverse happens to one part of the body, something else in the body compensates for this deficiency or removes the source of irritation or injury. For example, when it is hot we sweat.

Balance cannot be assumed: Sometimes the compensations are too intense or not intense enough. For example, if you take a drug that you are allergic to, a mild reaction could be skin rashes, but a severe reaction would be anaphylaxis which may result in death.

But balance must be restored: If our bodies are not able to restore the balance (homeostasis), then we have to help them. For example, if you are dehydrated, you need to drink water, and if you are hungry, you need to eat.

The OSB Therapeutic system is a new diagnostic and therapeutic system that addresses the imbalances in head and neck and oral muscular functions. The Oral Systemic Balance therapeutics treats TMJ symptoms, obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) and other conditions.

The Theory Behind Oral Systemic Balance (OSB) Therapeutics PDF Print E-mail

OropharynxThe mouth and the oropharynx (the portion of throat directly behind the mouth) assist in these functions: breathing, swallowing, and speech. The mouth comprises of tongue and its related muscles that in turn will affect the space of oropharynx.

The simple analogy is that tongue flows like a river from oropharynx into the mouth. The teeth resembles dam's wall that will affect the direction, location, and flow of the tongue. When there is disproportionate jaw size, misaligned teeth, and under/over contoured teeth, the tongue gets deflected to one side or pushed back into oropharynx resulting in array of symptoms jeopardizing breathing, swallowing, and speech which in extreme cases may cause sleep apnea, chocking (of food), and loss of speech.

In oral systematic imbalance, the Autonomic Nervous System which controls all the body processes that sustain life like blood pressure, immune system, feeding and drinking, will turn on with manifestation of fight and flight response with adrenalin rush. The physiological science such as blood pressure, heart rate and breathing patterns will show out of range values. Consequently, grinding and clenching of teeth will happen in most cases and the tongue gets contracted to increase the oropharynx space to facilitate breathing since taking breath is crucial for survival.

Breathing & Swallowing Essential to Life PDF Print E-mail

OSB HeadacheBreathing and swallowing are essential to life, so our bodies do what is necessary to help the mouth and throat perform these functions efficiently. For some people, these instinctive efforts cause pain and other symptoms.

The culprit is the tongue. This can prevent the mouth and throat from functioning properly. The tongue can fall back from the mouth to narrow the throat, decreasing air intake and impeding swallowing. Few are conscious of this, but the body automatically adjusts to keep the throat open.  It does this so we can survive. The price can include poor posture, headaches, aches and pains in the back and neck, sleep problems, and even stress as the body produces adrenaline to help the muscles work better.

O.S.B. therapy addresses these symptoms with a system that includes assessment and diagnostic testing along with a custom-designed oral device that helps keep the throat open. This device lets the throat muscles relax, permitting deeper breathing and easier swallowing. The therapy also helps balance the autonomic nervous system, which regulates body functions such as heart rate, body temperature and digestion.

When the therapy is applied by Dr.Vakhshoori not only can breathing and swallowing improve, but also posture can correct itself naturally and sleep can become more restful and refreshing. Many of our patients are former CPAP users

How do I know if I am out of Oral Balance? PDF Print E-mail
Through Your Symptoms:
  • TMJ pain or dysfunction (pain, clicking, clenching, grinding);
  • Craniofacial pain (pain in the head and neck area);
  • Sleep apnea (sleep disorder, restless sleep, tiredness when you wake, exhausted in the day);
  • Signs of Obstructive Sleep Apnea (snoring, restless legs, gasping for breath);
  • Vital signs (poorly regulated blood pressure, heart rate irregularities, poorly regulated response to heat or cold);
  • Anxiety symptoms (“on-edge” feelings, combativeness, frustration, etc), specially when distracted;
  • Unable to relax;

Through Clinical Signs

  • Talkativeness;
  • Tiredness;
  • Breathing difficulty;
  • Swallowing difficulty;
  • Sleepiness;
  • Medical and dental history.

Through Clinical Testing:

  • Of effectiveness of breathing, swallowing and speaking;
  • Vital signs monitoring;
  • Heart Rate Variability (HRV) testing;
  • Imaging (X-rays);
  • Posture analysis & monitoring of progress.
